Monday, third week of Lent (St. Joseph)

March 20, 2017

JMJ

Blessed Solemnity of St. Joseph!

Every Wednesday is dedicated to St. Joseph, and so is every March.
This year, the month of St. Joseph began on the day of St. Joseph–
which was also Ash Wednesday!

He is the patron of fathers, married people, pregnant women, unborn children,
children, orphans, dying people, house hunters, teachers, carpenters, laborers,
travelers, emigrants, interior souls, doubt, hesitation, accountants, lawyers,
bursars, joiners, cemetery workers, civil engineers, solicitors, social justice,
pioneers, people who fight Communism, and confectioners.

Ordinarily, St. Joseph is celebrated on March 19, but since that day fell on a Sunday,
his solemnity was moved so we would still have an opportunity to celebrate him,
getting a little break amidst our Lenten fast.

Readings:
2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16 (David’s throne will endure forever)
Psalm 89:2-5, 27, 29 “Save me, O Lord, in your steadfast love”
Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22 (Abraham is the father of all who have his faith)
+Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24 (Joseph obeys the angel, taking Mary into his home)
or +Luke 2:41-51 (the finding of Jesus in the temple)

St. Joseph was prepared
to set her free*,
the dearest treasure
of his heart,
the deepest loss
that love can know
aside from losing
the Divine.

He lost no time
when God assured him
that he was the chosen one
to Name His Son.

How willing am I to set free those whom I love dearly?
How receptive am I to the responsibilities with which God entrusts me?

St. Joseph, Pray For Us!

*According to my Greek interlinear text, the word used for St. Joseph’s “decision” to divorce Mary quietly is one that connotes being willing, rather than being determined.

Litany of St. Joseph

Lord, have mercy.
R/ Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
R/ Christ, have mercy.

He made him the lord of His household.
R/ And prince over all His possessions.

Let us pray:
O God, in Your ineffable providence
You were pleased to choose Blessed Joseph
to be the spouse of Your most holy Mother;
grant, we beg You,
that we may be worthy to have him for our intercessor in Heaven
whom on earth we venerate as our Protector:
You who live and reign forever and ever.
R/ Amen.
