With Moses in the lead
the tribes of Israel
(one tribe from
each of Jacob’s sons)
marched out of Egypt,
each in order,
with the tribe
of Judah
Prince Nashon
in command.

They left behind
Egyptian gods
sought out
the mountain
of the Lord
there to receive
in the ways
of liberty.
God came to them
with peals of thunder
gave them
writ on stone.
They all agreed
with awe and wonder,
they would worship
Him alone.

That didn’t last.

The gods of Egypt
were still in their hearts.
A golden calf
brought out the worst
in them.

God knew.
He wasn’t through.

It would be forty years
they were prepared
to reach
the Promised Land.

My God,
I mean to do
great things
for You,
but part of me
when things
get hard.
I’m glad
infinitely patient
with my
God-resistant heart.
