Thursday, fourth week of Lent, Solemnity of St. Joseph

March 19, 2015

JMJ

Blessed Solemnity of St. Joseph!

StJoseph

We get to feast in the midst of our Lenten fast!
Solemnities have the same rank as Sundays,
so if you’re celebrating your “little Easter” every Sunday
by enjoying some of the things you’ve given up,
you get yet another day of enjoyment thanks to St. Joseph.

Entrance Antiphon:
Behold, a faithful and prudent steward,
whom the Lord set over His household.

Collect:
Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that by St. Joseph’s intercession
Your Church may constantly watch over
the unfolding mysteries of human salvation,
whose beginnings You entrusted to his faithful care.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Readings:
2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16 (David’s throne will endure forever)
Psalm 89:2-5, 27, 29 “Save me, O Lord, in your steadfast love”
Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22 (Abraham is the father of all who have his faith)
+Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24 (Joseph obeys the angel, taking Mary into his home)
or +Luke 2:41-51 (the finding of Jesus in the temple)

St. Joseph was
the rightful king,

the heir
to David’s royal throne,
gone underground
when power
wrought corruption
and defeat.

He did not deem
his regal rights
a treasure to be grasped,
but wielded well
the scepter
of humility;
a servant-king
in governing
the holy house
of God.

Do I insist on my “rights”?
Do I live as if “to serve is to reign”?

Litany of St. Joseph

Lord, have mercy.
R/ Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
R/ Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
R/ Lord, have mercy.

Jesus, hear us.
R/ Jesus, graciously hear us.

R/ have mercy on us.

Holy Trinity, One God,
R/ have mercy on us.
(Response for each of the following invocations: pray for us)
Holy Mary,
St. Joseph,
Renowned offspring of David,
Light of Patriarchs,
Spouse of the Mother of God,
Chaste guardian of the Virgin,
Foster father of the Son of God,
Diligent protector of Christ,
Head of the Holy Family,
Joseph most just,
Joseph most chaste,
Joseph most prudent,
Joseph most strong,
Joseph most obedient,
Joseph most faithful,
Mirror of patience,
Lover of poverty,
Model of artisans,
Glory of home life,
Guardian of virgins,
Pillar of families,
Solace of the wretched,
Hope of the sick,
Patron of the dying,
Terror of demons,
Protector of Holy Church,

Lamb of God, who take away the sins of the world,
R/ spare us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, who take away the sins of the world,
R/ graciously hear us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, who take away the sins of the world.
R/ have mercy on us.

He made him the lord of His household.
R/ And prince over all His possessions.

Let us pray.
O God, in Your ineffable providence
You were pleased to choose Blessed Joseph
to be the spouse of Your most holy Mother;
grant, we beg You, that we may be worthy to have him for our intercessor in Heaven
whom on earth we venerate as our Protector:
You who live and reign forever and ever.
R/ Amen.
