Tuesday, Fourth Week of Advent (O Emmanuel, St. John of Kanty)

December 23, 2014

JMJ

Blessed Memorial of St. John of Kanty!

You can find his story here.

O Emmanuel,
God-with-us,
Our King and Lawgiver,
The Awaited one of the peoples
And their Savior
Come to save us, O Lord, our God

Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign.
Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son
and his name shall be called Emmanuel.
(see also Matthew 1:22)

Collect:
Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that by the example of the priest Saint John of Kanty
we may advance in the knowledge of holy things
and, by showing compassion to all,
may gain forgiveness in Your sight.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Readings:
James 2:14-17 (Faith without works is dead)
Psalm 112:1-9 “Blessed the one who gives to the poor”
+ Luke 6:27-38 (Do good to those who hate you)

Real faith
will move the mountains
in my heart:
impossibilities
of blessing
those who anger me,
returning good for evil,
trading in
what I desire
for what’s good.

It penetrates
a heart of stone,
sees from
the vantage-point
of Heaven
what that heart
can become–

and sets its sites
on making miracles
come true.

Am I settling for too little in God’s work of transforming of my heart?
Do I dream of helping the people who irritate me get to Heaven, to be with me there eternally?
