Saturday, third week of Lent
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and never forget all His benefits;
it is He who forgives all your sins.
Rejoicing in this annual celebration of our Lenten observance,
we pray, O Lord,
that, with our hearts set on the paschal mysteries,
we may be gladdened by their full effects.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.
Hosea 6:1-6 (God wants changed lives, not bribes)
Psalm 51:3-4, 18-21 “It is steadfast love, not sacrifice, that God desires”
+Luke 18:9-14 (the proud Pharisee vs. the humble tax collector)
Is my piety ephemeral–
a splendid show
with nothing underneath?
the Lord will strike at this
and show it up
for what it really is
(or, rather, isn’t).
He’s not here for entertainment.
He means business!
He would rather have you flub your lines
and try and try again,
than launch a polished pretense
Am I counting on God or on myself–on my showmanship?
Am I holding up my “good side” to God, hoping He won’t notice the rest?
