Annunciation

JMJ

Blessed Solemnity of the Annunciation!

…established by Bl. Pope John Paul II as
the Day of the Unborn Child

Today we celebrate the beginning of Our Lord’s life on earth…
it’s 9 months before Christmas, the length of a typical pregnancy.

You can find ideas for observing the day here.

We get to sing the Gloria today!!
In case you haven’t missed it, the Gloria is a prayer we fast from during Advent & Lent,
bringing it back only for Feasts and Solemnities (of which there are precious few).
Today is just such a celebration!
We get to celebrate the Incarnation, the day when Heaven was first wedded to earth
in the conception of Jesus Christ in Mary’s womb,
nine months before His birth at Christmas.
And our culture hasn’t even secularized or trivialized it, the way it has Christmas.
There’s something to be said for obscurity :).

Collect:
O God, who willed that Your Word
should take on the reality of human flesh
in the womb of the Virgin Mary,
grant, we pray,
that we, who confess our Redeemer to be God and man,
may merit to become partakers even in His divine nature.
Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Readings:
Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10 (a virgin shall bear a son and name him Emmanuel)
Psalm 40:7-11 “Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will”
Hebrews 10:4-10 (Jesus came to do God’s will)
+Luke 1:26-38 (the Annunciation)

The will of God
is God-With-Us.

He doesn’t want to stay aloof
as Ahaz would have kept Him,
at arm’s-length.

The sign He gave
(far higher than
the heavens,
deeper than
the netherworld!),

was what He wanted from
this king
–and each of us–
a tender, trusting love
that had the strength
to open wide
the deepest parts
of her
to His divine indwelling
so that He could be
for us
the God Who saves*.

Am I keeping God at arms-length, like Ahaz,
or welcoming Him in to profound intimacy in me, like the Blessed Virgin Mary?

*The Name “Jesus” means literally, “God saves.”

The Angelus
(traditionally prayed in the morning, at noon and at night)

V. The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary
R. And she conceived by the Holy Spirit
Hail Mary…
V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord
R. Be it done unto me according to Thy word
Hail Mary…
V. And the Word became flesh
R. And dwelt among us
Hail Mary…
V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ

Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee O Lord,
Thy grace into our hearts, that we,
to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known
by the message of an angel may, by His Passion and Cross,
come to share in the glory of His resurrection.
Through this same Christ, our Lord. Amen.
