Saturday, Second week of Advent (St. John of the Cross)

December 14, 2013

JMJ

Blessed St. John of the Cross’s Day!

St. John of the Cross

You can find his story here.

Entrance Antiphon:
May I never boast except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
through which the world is crucified to me and I to the world.

Collect:
O God, Who gave the Priest Saint John
an outstanding dedication to perfect self-denial
and love of the Cross,
grant that, by imitating him closely at all times,
we may come to contemplate eternally Your glory.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Readings:
I Corinthians 2:1-10 (We speak God’s hidden, mysterious wisdom)
Psalm 37:3-6, 30-31 “The mouth of the just murmurs wisdom”
+ Luke 14:25-33 (if you do not renounce worldly attachments, you cannot be My disciple)

What is the one thing
you could not let go
if God required it
of you?

What is the thread
that binds you
to this world
of circumstance?

It need not be a chain
(though it may be)–
as long as it’s not broken
you’re not free.

In detachment,
the spirit finds quiet and repose for coveting nothing.
Nothing wearies it by elation,
and nothing oppresses it by dejection,
because it stands in the center of its own humility.
~Saint John of the Cross

O my God, grant me, I beseech You, the grace to love You so profoundly
that every earthly tie will pale in comparison to You.
