Solemnity of St. Joseph

March 19, 2013

JMJ

Blessed Solemnity of St. Joseph!

We get to feast in the midst of our Lenten fast!
Solemnities have the same rank as Sundays,
so if you’re celebrating your “little Easter” every Sunday
by enjoying some of the things you’ve given up,
you get yet another day of enjoyment thanks to St. Joseph.

And here is Pope Francis’ homily for today.

Entrance Antiphon:
Behold, a faithful and prudent steward, whom the Lord set over His household.

Collect:

Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that by St. Joseph’s intercession
Your Church may constantly watch over
the unfolding mysteries of human salvation,
whose beginnings You entrusted to his faithful care.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Readings:
2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16 (David’s throne will endure forever)
Psalm 89:2-5, 27, 29 “Save me, O Lord, in your steadfast love”
Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22 (Abraham is the father of all who have his faith)
+Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24 (Joseph obeys the angel, taking Mary into his home)
or +Luke 2:41-51 (the finding of Jesus in the temple)

The House of Joseph
is the House of David.

The House of David
is the Church:
the Kingdom built on rock
to stand forever.

Your house and your kingdom
shall endure forever before Me;
your throne shall stand forever.
~2 Samuel 7:16

on this rock I will build My Church,
and the jaws of death
shall not prevail against it
~Matthew 16:18

This is the House
that took the Virgin in–

When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home
~Matthew 1:24

–the House
that through obedience
became
the House of God!

It was of her that Jesus
Who is called the Messiah
was born.
~Matthew 1:16

This is the legacy of faith
passed down from Abraham,
whose fatherhood
embraces all
who trust the great I AM.
Biology gives way
to holiness.

It’s from this source
that holy Joseph
draws his patronage
(his fatherhood)…

I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
from Whom all fatherhood
in Heaven and on earth
draws its name
~Ephesians 3:14-15

…of Jesus
and His Universal Church.
