Wednesday, First Week of Advent

December 5, 2012

Blessed Wednesday!

Entrance Antiphon:
The Lord will come and He will not delay.
He will illumine what is hidden in darkness
and reveal Himself to the nations.

Collect:
Prepare our hearts, we pray, O Lord our God,
by Your divine power,
so that at the coming of Christ Your Son
we may be found worthy of the banquet of eternal life
and merit to receive heavenly nourishment from His hands.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Readings:
Isaiah 25: 6-10 (God’s feast and salvation on the mountain)
Psalm 23 “I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life”
+ Matthew 15: 29-37 (Jesus healing and feeding the crowd on the mountain)

On this mountain…
-Isaiah 25:6

Mountains of Jerusalem

It’s in our blood-
we will put effort into our worship.
We will climb mountains
for what we value most.
The key is climbing the right mountain
to worship the right god!

We’ve wrestled with this from the beginning.
Over and over God had to correct His people
for climbing the wrong mountains
to worship the wrong gods!
(see Leviticus 26:30, 2 Kings 17:11-18, Ezekiel 20:27-44, etc.)

He’s very specific:

On this mountain
the Lord of Hosts will provide…
-Isaiah 25:6

People brought their problems to Jesus
up on the mountain
and He solved them.

Jesus…went up on the mountain…
Great crowds came to Him,
having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute,
and many others.
They placed then at his feet
and He cured them.
-Matthew 15:29-30

He wiped the tears from their faces,
removed their reproach
(infirmity was mistakenly considered a sign of God’s displeasure).

When we climb the mountain of the Lord,
laying our problems at Jesus’ feet
in Confession
–our lameness, blindness, deformity–
He heals us
solves our problems
(or at least gives us grace to work out a solution),
wipes away our tears,
removes our disgrace.

Then He feeds us.

Worship is food.

The ancients knew this better than we.
Animals offered in sacrifice
(whether the worship was true or false)
were served at meals (see Daniel 1, Exodus 12, etc.).

The Lamb of God
sacrificed from the foundation of the world (see Revelation 13:8)
is the juicy, rich food,
His Precious Blood,
the pure choice wines
set before us
on this mountain…His Church.

This is the mountain of Jerusalem
where the Lamb says, “Take and eat”,
Mount Calvary,
where His Blood was shed.
This is where the web is destroyed.
This is where death is vanquished
This is where God saves us.

You’re climbing up a mountain
to worship a god.
Is it the right mountain,
the right god?
