Good Friday

April 6, 2012

Blessed Good Friday,

Today begins the novena of Divine Mercy.

And here are some creative Good Friday recipes (especially hot cross buns).

Remember Your mercies, O Lord,
and with Your eternal protection sanctify Your servants,
for whom Christ Your Son,
by the shedding of His Blood,
established the Paschal Mystery.
Who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

O God, who, by the Passion of Christ Your Son, our Lord,
abolished the death inherited from ancient sin
by every succeeding generation,
grant that just as, being conformed to Him,
we have borne by the law of nature
the image of the man of earth,
so by the sanctification of grace
we may bear the image of the Man of Heaven.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
(Opening Prayer for today’s service of the veneration of the Cross)

Isaiah 52:13- 53:12 (God laid our guilt upon Christ)
Psalm 31:2,6,12-13, 15-17, 25 “Father, into Your hands I commend my spirit”
Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:7-9 (Jesus, our high priest, knows our weakness and pleads for us)
+John 18:1-19:42 (the Passion)

He’s been there.

He understands

we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize
with our weaknesses,
but one who has similarly been tested in every way,
yet without sin.
So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy
and to find grace for timely help.
-Hebrews 4:15-16

The one who hasn’t faced your test
can’t help,
nor he who faced it and fell flat.
You need a friend who’s met the same exam…
and got it right!

That friend is Christ.
He’s seen it all.
He longs to help!
That’s why He came.
That’s why He took on flesh,
endured the traitor’s kiss, the taunts, the blows.
That’s why He stretched out bloody hands upon the tree–
so you would see
profound availability.

Whom are you looking for?
“Jesus, the Nazorean”
-John 18:7

He IS the One we’re looking for
the final end of every search.
The things we think we want
won’t satisfy.
They leave us dry.
We thirst for more and MORE
until we drink
from pierced side,
from Mercy’s tide,
the well-spring of His Heart.

Just come!

It doesn’t matter where you’ve been.
He’s paid it all.

it was our infirmities he bore, our sufferings that he endured…
he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins;
upon his was the chastisement that makes us whole,
by his stripes we were healed.
We had all gone astray, like sheep, each following his own way;
but the Lord laid upon Him the guilt of us all…
he shall take away the sins of many,
and win pardon for their offenses
-Isaiah 53:4-6, 12

Those who break His Heart who turn away,
won’t let Him pay
their awful debt–
for them, He died in vain!
That was the awful agony
that crushed Him in Gethsemane:
His Passion,
gone to waste

for one He loved!

He waits with open arms for you,
to seal your confidence
with open Heart,
to do His part
to get you through
and make you whole.
He loves you so!

Just come
and count on Him!

Where do you turn for answers?
What limits Jesus’ mercy?
What does He most desire from us?
