First Wednesday of Passiontide
Enlighten, O God of compassion,
the hearts of Your children, sanctified by penance,
and in Your kindness
grant those You stir to a sense of devotion
a gracious hearing when they cry out to You.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.
(Opening Prayer for today’s Mass)
Daniel 3:14-20, 91-92, 95 (Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the fiery furnace)
Daniel 3:52-56 “Glory and praise forever!”
+ John 8:31-42 (we are slaves of sin, but Jesus has come to set us free)
Whom will you obey?
If not God,
you’ll find that other
gods will take His place–
like kings with white-hot furnaces
their subjects with a fiery choice
of life or death
(proud leaders who hold conscience in contempt
are nothing new).
You shall have no other gods before Me
These other gods enslave, destroy.
everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin
when sin reaches maturity it begets death
It is the truth
that sets us free.
If you remain in My word, you will truly be My disciples,
and you will know the truth,
and the truth will set you free
That truth IS God.
I AM the way, the truth and the life
But He can’t free
those who resist.
We must obey
Observe the freedom in the furnace:
They walked about in the flames,
singing to God and blessing the Lord.
That glorious freedom can be ours
when we obey
What or whom are you obeying when you disobey God? Your desires or fears? Social pressure? Habit?
How long has it been since you let God remove your shackles in the sacrament of Confession?
Have you experienced the freedom of obedience in the furnace?
