Tuesday, second week of Advent (St. Nicholas): Cry Out!

December 6, 2011

Blessed St. Nicholas’ Day!

His story can be found here.

O God, who have shown forth Your salvation
to all the ends of the earth,
grant, we pray,
that we may look forward in joy
to the glorious Nativity of Christ.
Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Isaiah 40:1-11 (prepare the way for our God, Who comes to shepherd us)
Psalm 96:1-3, 10-13 “Our Lord Comes in strength”
+ Matthew 18:12-14 (the Good Shepherd leaves the 99 to search for the stray)

Cry out!
Isaiah 40:6

If you were lost, trapped, desperate,
and someone spied help on the way,
wouldn’t you want them to cry out–
in a BIG way?!

Get yourself up onto a lofty mountain,
Zion, herald of glad tidings;
Cry out at the top of your voice,
Jerusalem, herald of good news!
Shout fearlessly
and say to the cities of Judah:
Here is your God!
-Isaiah 40:9

We are lost, trapped, desperate.
We are far from home
(Heaven, the place prepared for us from the foundation of the world -see Matthew 25:34),
ensnared by deception and sin, utterly incapable of saving ourselves.

Behold! The Lord God comes in power,
Who rules by His strong arm;
Behold, His reward is with Him
and His recompense goes before Him
-Isaiah 40:10

Here is your Shepherd.
Here is the rugged guardian
who turns His back on the comforts of shelter and convenience
(the 99 safe at home in the fold)
to brave the wilderness in search of His own…
in search of you!

And He’s not coming to scold you.
He’s coming to press you close to His Heart.

Like a shepherd He feeds His flock;
in His arms He gathers the lambs,
carrying them in His bosom,
and leading the ewes with care.
-Isaiah 40:11

He’s coming to rejoice over you!
(see Matthew 18:13)

These are glad tidings–

That’s literally what the word “Gospel” means.

God wants us to be contagiously psyched up about this!

He wants the whole world to be bursting with the jubilant news!

Sing to the Lord, bless His Name!
Proclaim His salvation day after day,
declare His glory among the nations,
His marvels to every people!
Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad!
Let the sea thunder, and all it holds!
Let the countryside exult, and all that is in it,
and all the trees of the forest cry out for joy
-Psalm 96:2, 3, 11-12

I tell you, if these were silent,
the very stones would cry out.
-Luke 19:40

Little lamb, little lamb, little lost lamb, look up.
See the angels?
See the glory of the Lord?
Help is on the way!
