Fourth Sunday of Advent (Christmas Eve)

December 24, 2006

Blessed Sunday!

Micah 5:1-4 (the Messiah will come from Bethlehem)
Psalm 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19 “Lord, make us turn to You; let us see Your face and we shall be saved”
Hebrews 10:5-10 (Jesus came to do God’s will)
+Luke 1:39-45 (the Visitation)

God is ready. He was ready before time began. The Messiah’s origin is “from of old” (Micah 5:2), and His birthplace has been decreed. Jesus says of His Father, “a body You have prepared for Me” (Hebrews 10:5)–a Body in which He will humbly do His Father’s will in perfect, sacrificial love.

Mary, too, is ready. She too has humbly committed herself to fulfilling God’s will in perfect, sacrificial love. As she makes haste to the hill country of Judea, not far from Bethlehem, she comes to us to help us, bringing Jesus to us within her womb. Within her, our God leaps the mountains and bounds the hills to come to meet us (see Song of Songs 2:8). We in turn, already filled with the Holy Spirit through Baptism and Confirmation, leap for joy along with the unborn St. John the Baptist, and cry out with his mother, St. Elizabeth, “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me?!” (Luke 1:42-43).

Very soon, we shall see the Face of our God. And we shall be saved.

May our hearts beat high with joy as we see our God hurrying to us.
