Saturday, First Week of Advent

December 3, 2005

Blessed St. Francis Xavier’s Day! (look for his story in the “saints of Advent” category)

Readings:
Isaiah 30: 19-21, 23-26
Psalm 147: 1-6 “Happy are all who long for the coming of the Lord”
+ Matthew 9:35-10: 1, 6-8

“from behind, a voice will sound in your ears: ‘This is the way; walk in it,’ when you would turn to the right or to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21) God promises that He will teach us, that He will guide and direct us. He saw that we were “bewildered and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36). Jesus’ response to that was to urge His apostles to pray for vocations, and to send His apostles, the first bishops, out to heal, to drive out demons and to tell people how to get to Heaven. He had given Himself and His power to them, now they were to pass on freely the gift they’d received. He still works through the successors of those apostles, Pope Benedict XVI and the bishops in communion with him. Through them, God’s voice still tells us, “This is the way to Heaven; walk in it,” when we would turn to the right or to the left.

May we have ears to hear the voice of God, that we may arrive safely in our heavenly homeland.
